DÍA 04 CALAFATE
DÍA 04 CALAFATE

Breakfast at the hotel. In the morning, we will depart for a visit to the Perito Moreno Glacier. We will leave Calafate for Los Glaciares National Park, approximately 50 km along a paved road (declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1981). We will continue for 30 km within Los Glaciares National Park until we reach the Perito Moreno Glacier. From the outset, the journey offers pleasant surprises. Leaving the town, to the right, we can see Lake Argentino with its Redonda Bay. Here, we can appreciate a significant variety of birdlife, including the black-necked swan, flamingo, steamer duck, coot, and cauqué. The yellow color of the countryside is notable due to its grasses called coirón, among which the white coirón and petiso stand out. The first 40 km traverse the Patagonian steppe, then continue to the entrance of the National Park to observe the tree vegetation belonging mostly to the "notofagus" family (ñires, guindos, lengas) and the occasional cinnamon tree, as well as flowers of various colors, among which the notro stands out for its intense red color, corresponding to the Patagonian Andean Forest. Once on the glacier, we head toward the main balcony and then freely walk the walkways until the meeting time agreed upon with the guide. The walkways offer different perspectives of the glacier from their viewpoints, allowing you to enjoy this incredible natural spectacle. The glacier, named after the great Argentine explorer of the last century, is one of the few in the world still advancing. This has made it one of the greatest natural spectacles in the world. As it advances, it dammed the waters of the Rico Arm of Lake Argentino, causing its level to rise up to 30 meters above that of Lake Argentino, putting pressure on the ice. First, a tunnel is created with a vault over 50 meters long, through which the waters of the Brazo Rico descend to Lake Argentino. Water erosion eventually causes the vault to collapse, in one of the most impressive spectacles ever witnessed. The process has been repeated at irregular intervals, with the latest rupture occurring on March 10, 2018. For lunch, the Park has a service area with a restaurant and snack bar. During this tour, we will also navigate the northern arm of the lake on the Nautical Safari, which allows us to appreciate the majestic southern wall of the Perito Moreno Glacier. This wall of glacial ice is approximately 60 meters high and more than 100 meters below lake level. The boat approaches within 200 meters of the place where the Glacier touches the Magallanes Peninsula and then travels the entire length (almost 3 km) of the south wall, allowing you to enjoy the daily rockfalls and the magical beauty of its seracs, crevasses, and intense blues. This service is operated on the Yagán boat, with capacity for 110 passengers. Boarding takes place at the port located in the "Bajo de las Sombras" bay, approximately 7 km before the Glacier Viewpoint. This is highly recommended to complete the visit to the glacier, as the south wall is not visible in all its magnificence from the footbridges. At the end of the tour, in the afternoon, return to the hotel. Overnight stay.
